Share

Quick definition

A share is a security representing a portion of a company's capital, entitling the holder to dividends and voting rights.

A share is a financial instrument that represents a fraction of the ownership of a company. Shareholders, the owners of shares, hold a portion of the company's capital and therefore have voting rights at general meetings. Shares may be listed on a stock exchange, allowing investors to buy and sell them on the secondary market.

Shares also carry dividends, which are distributions of the company's profits to shareholders. These dividends can vary according to the company's distribution policy. Shares fall into two main categories: ordinary shares, which carry voting rights, and preference shares, which entitle holders to fixed dividends but carry no voting rights.

Investing in shares can offer opportunities for long-term growth and returns, but it also carries risk, as share prices can fluctuate depending on the company's performance and market conditions.

Common Use Cases:

  • Investing in a company to become a part-owner.
  • Obtaining voting rights at shareholders' meetings.
  • Receiving dividends based on the profits the company generates.

Example:
A small-business owner buys 100 shares in a technology start-up during its initial public offering (IPO). As a shareholder, he can vote on important decisions and hope to receive dividends if the company turns a profit.
