Avoir Fiscal (French Dividend Tax Credit)

Quick definition

The avoir fiscal is a tax credit granted to shareholders when dividends are distributed.

Overview: The avoir fiscal is a mechanism that allows shareholders to avoid double taxation on the dividends they receive. When a company pays dividends to its shareholders, those dividends have generally already been subject to corporation tax. The avoir fiscal gives shareholders a tax credit on the amount received, reducing the personal tax due on the dividends. This scheme encourages investment in shares by easing the tax burden on investors. Common Use Cases: Reducing personal tax on dividends received. Encouraging shareholders to reinvest in the company. Optimising the taxation of dividends distributed to shareholders. Example: A shareholder receives €1,000 in dividends from their stake in a company. Thanks to the avoir fiscal, they benefit from a tax credit that reduces the tax payable on this income.
